Proyecto Cartas Da Las Gracias

Project Letters

Thank you so much for supporting Proyecto Cartas also known as Project Letters. We are very happy with the results. I was at a press conference in East Phoenix at the Main Post Office and personally observed 10,000 letters going out all at the same time!!! It was fantastic. I had other volunteers in West Phoenix that exceeded that number at 13,000 letters that went out from a Postal Service there.

We had volunteers calling from Tucson, Arizona that launched hundreds from individuals that served as collection centers. There were thousands that went out from Tucson, Lake Havasu, Bullhead City, Prescott, Flagstaff. Unbelievable!!! Remember that isn't counting your efforts and all those from LA, San Diego, Frisco, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and the list goes on. There had to be 40-50,00 out of Arizona alone. Oh, Nayarit, Mexico reported 3,500. We had been promoting it globally as well through international radio stations. Imagine....all those letters all going out on the same day. Abraham Lincoln's birth date and all asking for Immigration Reform in order to allow our people to come out of the shadows.

I feel so good about our efforts!!! I am fatigued, but it was all worth it!!!

What's next? Well I announced to the press on Thursday that we would be writing letters to the Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder asking for an investigation of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's racial profiling, violation of citizen's rights and violation of human rights.

I will keep you appraised of our new movement.

Hoy Fui Testigo

The Economy

In Arizona everyday the economic situation has worsened. As an individual who assists clients with their legal problems, I hear daily from those currently losing their homes or having vehicles repossessed. After much analysis I have come to a very clear conclusion as to why we are in this economic dilemma and in particular in Arizona. I have been screaming this every day and very few listen. After all, I am simply an insignificant citizen of this great country. Perhaps being of Hispanic descent may not help based on my theory and final conclusion.

You see here in Arizona that attack on the Immigrant and the undocumented Immigrant is horrendous. This attack started a few years ago and spread throughout the United States like a vicious cancer. Elected officials created anti-Immigrant laws which included employer sanction laws. The elected Maricopa County Sheriff who was previously interested in dressing prisoners in pink underwear and black and white striped jail uniforms found a new way to get media attention and started and has continued to have road blocks set up in primarily Latino neighborhoods which essentially allows him and his deputies to stop individuals they suspect of minor traffic violations (i.e., broken tail lights, broken windshields, etc.). In executing these stops those individual who are stopped are asked what their legal status is in the United States. It is important to note that those asked are 99% Latinos and many that have been detained and released have been U.S. Citizens or Legal Residents. This is tantamount to racial profiling. All this while there is 45,000 plus outstanding felony warrants to be executed in Maricopa County, Arizona alone. This activity has caused those undocumented individuals to go further underground in their communities. In essence hiding from further persecution. They have left their jobs or have been terminated based on the employer sanction laws. This means individuals who had several family members contributing to the payment of a mortgage have essentially been forced out of a job, which means that mortgages were not paid and foreclosure proceedings were commenced. Many have returned to Mexico or their country of origin, yet others have taken cash jobs and are not earning what they were previously earning. Essentially less money spent by the cash spending undocumented Immigrant interprets into less sales for retail stores. Even those who were not servicing the Latino Community are affected based on the fact that those who were servicing the Latino Community no longer have the incoming revenue and cannot purchase or trade with the Non-Latino servicing businesses. This means that those mainstream U.S. Citizens are no longer able to pay their bills and they have defaulted on their mortgages based on layoffs etc.. Cause and effect. This is a no brainer!!! Now, multiply that throughout the United States as the Anti-Immigrant movement gained velocity and the cancer spread throughout many key states. It is obvious that we have a domino effect occurring here. Recently I saw an article in an Arizona newspaper which quotes an Economist as saying that the lack of money spent by the Undocumented Immigrant has greatly impacted the economy in Arizona. That any burden on the system by the Undocumented Immigrant was far outweighed by their contribution both in the form of a stimulus by spending cash and by paying sales taxes which obviously helps the state of Arizona.

The question here is…..When will the U.S. Economists come to the same realization and come out publicly to explain this cause and effect that has so greatly affected this great nation of ours? Will we have to wait four, maybe five years for statistics to be gathered and conclusions to be drawn? The question is, where will we be then? In a full blown depression? When by a simple act of congress we would have been able to pass an Immigration Reform Bill that would allow these millions of contributors to come out of the shadows, pay taxes and assimilate into these great United States.

Of course I'm not an Economist I'm just another U.S. Citizen with an analytical mind and eyes and ears, oh, and of course, an opinion.

Project Letters

As many of you know I do a radio talk show in Phoenix Monday thru Friday. I have not been a proponent of the marches in the streets based on the fact that I feel it simply serves to anger the general populous. I think marches were appropriate in the 50's, 60's and 70's, but we now have to think outside the box!!!

I have come up with an idea and have already received serious press coverage in Arizona. I am also in contact with media nationwide as well as various grass root organizations nationwide. I will be covering it on a San Francisco radio program which will be doing regular updates on this very important project. This project is intended to be a nationwide and eventually a global project that will take place within the next 90 days or so.

The plan is to have anybody that supports Immigration Reform write a letter to our President. This includes children of immigrants legal or undocumented, Undocumented Adults, U.S. Citizens of all nationalities, all gender, all sexuality, all religion etc.. Those Immigrants with families in foreign countries who are also affected by this dilemma will contact their relatives and ask that they send a letter from their country of origin. This will create the global aspect to the project.

This letter will be addressed to the White House and all letters will be sent on the same day!!! This will be able to be done from the privacy of peoples homes and can be sent without return addresses if desired. This will allow those that cannot go out to the streets to ask for relief in the form of a revamping of the currently broken immigration system and a reform that will allow those undocumented immigrants who are currently hiding in the shadows to come out and assimilate into this great country of ours.

Just imagine, children can write brief letters in crayon. The Elderly can write a brief handwritten letter and mail it from the comfort of their home. You can mail it from work. However it must all go out on the same day!!!!

The date......February 12, 2009. February 12 is Abraham Lincoln's birthday and is very symbolic especially because he was so instrumental in breaking the chains of slavery. It is also important because Abraham Lincoln is one of our President Barack Obama's heroes. He has continually quoted Lincoln in his speeches and in his book.

Please join this very important project and tell others about it. You will soon see a groundswell of support for this project. You will see it in the media and you will hear about it in your communities. This is the perfect way to let our new President know about the needs of immigrants who we so desperately need to help.

Please cast your voice in support of this project and tell your neighbors and co-workers to send their letters for change as they so diligently cast their votes for change.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and I look forward to speaking with you or communicating with you by email soon. Please feel free to call me or email me so that I can let you know how you can help with this project.

PLEASE SEND ALL LETTERS ON FEBRUARY 12, 2009. The Address to the White House is as follows:

President Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
